Using Layers to Adjust Color and Light (Week 8)

This is a photo I took this past summer of baby raccoons that were living in the tree behind my house. First I used the levels adjustment layer and increased the shadow level amount to lose some of the grainy detail that was there due to the poor lighting the photo was taken with. I then used the hue/saturation layer to increase the saturation level slightly (I couldn't do it too much or else the black didn't look good). I then had some fun using the hue scale; I finally decided to stick with a bluish background. It was fun to see how this photo looked with a range of different colors in the background; a bright green sky or a deep magenta sky? I think this deep blue hue gives the shot a feeling of it being dusk, which I prefer.

This photo was taken during a late-afternoon summer shower. You can see the rainbow faintly in the background. First I had to copy some of the trees to cover-up the date stamp that was on the bottom right of the photo. I struggled to get the sky to blend better where I did this. As for the color/light adjustments, I used the brightness layer to light-up the picture, making the trees and the rainbow more clear. This also created more depth to the photo with raindrops, though I am wondering now if I should have sharpened the shot better so the drops weren't so fuzzy. I then used the hue/saturation layer to bring the colors into a deeper tone. Any suggestions on how I could get the actual rainbow to be more vivid?

  1. The raccoon picture is so creepy! It really looks great. I love the eyes looking at you, they look like a people up there. The one on the left seems to have a human head. Looks great.

  2. I like both pictures you did a great job. Good choice by using the blue hue in the first picture I think it looks realistic. The second photo is very neat the raindrops look like stars and I like how the rainbow was brought out to be more clear to the viewer. Great job.
